Malta Welcomes Record Number of Cruise Ship Passengers

Posted in Cruises  by tribune5 on February 27th, 2009

Malta has recently achieved a very impressive milestone: 500,000 cruise ship passengers in one year.

Many families choose to enjoy their yearly vacation at sea with their children in tow. Some cruise lines offer special discounts or exciting packages for people with small children. Child play rooms and kids’ programs offer an exciting experience for children while parents take time out to relax. The typical minimum age to join a children’s program is about 2 or 3 years. Some cruise lines also offer special teen activities, including a teen clubhouse.

Cruise for all Ages and Nationalities

Cruises aren’t just for honeymooners or retirees! According to the National Statistics Office, European passengers made up 77.8 percent of Malta’s cruise ship traffic. Americans made up another 58.1 percent of total traffic. Growth in the European and American markets helped balance out the slight decreases in German and Italian markets. The most populous demographic was the 40-59 age range, followed closely by the 60-79 demographic.

Cruise Ships

Traditionally, cruise ships were used only for the rich and famous or royalty. As such, they developed the reputation of being very large and ritzy. Traditional cruise ships weren’t quite built to today’s standards, but they were the nicest ships of their time. The RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 was built in the 1960s and made her maiden voyage on May 2, 1969. For her time, the QE2 was one of the nicest liners on the open seas. The ship was retired in November 2008 and will serve as a floating hotel in Dubai.

Cruise ships are passenger ships used primarily for pleasure. They have come a long way since the mid 1960s! Many of today’s cruise ships have on-deck swimming pools and outdoor game areas. Indoor game areas, nice restaurants, bars and spacious cabins help round out an experience not likely to be forgotten for first-timers. Many people enjoy their first cruise so immensely that they immediately start looking for a great deal for next year’s vacation.

Island Cruises

Cruises are much more than just a boat outing! Most cruise ships depart from a port of call near a major city or beach and then travel to several destinations before returning. Each port can be an exciting experience for all cruise ship passengers. Cruises to island nations such as Malta, Cyprus, Tonga or the Bahamas may visit each island and allow passengers to spend several hours enjoying the unique atmosphere of each stop. During this time, the ship is generally cleaned, inspected and prepared to continue the trip.

Projections for 2009

In 2005, a mere 313,611 passengers arrived at Malta by way of cruise ship. Two years later, in 2007, that number increased to 487,893. Such high percentage increases are a welcomed sight to Malta’s tourism board and economy. Between January 2008 and October 2008, a total of 496,283 passengers arrived in Malta. That is a 16.5 percent increase over the same time frame from 2007. The island continues to set new records each year and the number of cruise ship passengers in 2009 is expected to rise yet again.

Vacationing on a Budget? Think Hotel With a Hot Tub!

Posted in Travel  by earlyretirement on February 27th, 2009

Everyone loves vacations but the only problem is that for most people, going on vacation is very few and far between. So when it comes time to make that getaway, it’s important for most people to make the very best of it. One thing that is usually on the mind of vacationers is the budget they have to work with.

So in order to make the best of a vacation on a tight budget, many people think they won’t be able to afford luxuries like things such as a hotel with a hot tub. In many cases, this could be true depending on where your destination is. But in reality, the destination shouldn’t be as important as the amenities when it comes to vacationing on a budget.

Where to Vacation to Get the Amenities You Want

Places like Hawaii and Mexico place high on most people’s list when it comes time for their vacation. But if you’re going to need to take a trip on a budget, you probably won’t get much bang for your buck in at these destinations. Why not think outside the box?

Arizona is a beautiful place full of rich land and plenty of views and places to visit. Most people don’t think of vacationing here as it isn’t a hot spot for getaways, but you can easily afford a hotel with a hot tub along with some extremely nice nights out on the town including exemplary food and great deals on drinks at local night clubs. There is also plenty to do for the family, given you enjoy the outdoors.

If you’re looking to explore a different culture than you are used to, a place like Mississippi might just be the place for you. Sure, it may not sound as exciting as a day out on the beaches of Hawaii, but with all the money you save on your amenities like a hotel with a hot tub and other like things, you’ll be able to head back home and invest on a home upgrade or even put some money away for your next vacation!

In the end, a vacation is something that is meant to enlighten you and take a load off of your daily pressures. Concentrate more on spending an evening with your loved one at your hotel in a hot tub rather than the pricey nightlife or day spas you would be forfeiting by visiting a less desirable location. More than likely, you’ll find plenty of awesome things to do on your trip and you’ll be able to live like a king or queen for the entire time you’re there!

Eddie Lamb provides an abundance of information on a range of topical subjects. This article Vacationing on a Budget? Think Hotel With a Hot Tub! is just one of a host of useful articles about Hot Tubs listed on our site map at Hot Tubs Luxury.

Enjoy Historic Punta Gorda in Southwest Florida

Posted in Destinations  by RickHendershot on February 27th, 2009

If you are longing for a peaceful sunny vacation in Southwest Florida, and have a penchant for history, then Punta Gorda is the place for you.

Punta Gorda is situated where Charlotte Harbor and the Peace River merge, just south of Port Charlotte. Although the name sounds very romantic, translated form the Spanish is means fat point. It holds the distinction of being the country seat of Charlotte County. Surprisingly it is the only municipality in the county that is incorporated.

About ten years after the American Civil War ended, the Howard brothers became the area’s first settlers. Then ten years after settlement, the railroads arrived, along with land developers and tourists. As the most southerly stop on the South Florida Railroad, Punta Gorda attracted some enterprising people. George Brown, an African-American landowner and shipbuilder, was one of the founding fathers of his fledgling town.

In 1887, a meeting was held in Hector’s Billiard Parlor and Drugstore to get the ball rolling on incorporation. Of the thirty-four men attending four were African-American. Even though Cornelius Vanderbilt who owned part of the fancy Punta Gorda Hotel, lent a gentile flavor, it was a rough and ready frontier town. Since the town was on the edge of nowhere, it attracted some wild and shifty characters who thought nothing of settling disputes with a gun.

In 1921, Charlotte County was created by the splitting of DeSoto County and a small bridge was built along the new Tamiami Trail, joining up Punta Gorda and Charlotte Harbor. It was replaced by the Barron Collier Bridge in 1931, and now visitors can easily cross back and forth on a beautiful new link over the Peace River.

When visiting this historic town, we sure to devote lots of time to the 1921 Blanchard House Museum, originally the home of Joseph Blanchard, an African-American fisherman and sea captain. It is full of exhibits depicting civic and religious life, politics, education and the Civil Rights Movement. You will get lost in the wonderful newspaper clippings, heirlooms, and vintage photographs.

Why not take a walking tour and soak up the rustic old world feel of the town. It has thrown off its wild beginnings, and is now a vibrant riverfront city that has something for everyone. Admire the two storey colonial houses wrapped with huge front verandahs which stand in stark contrast to the usual bungalows and low rise homes of other Florida towns.

The jewel of Punta Gorda is the sprawling Fishermen’s Village, that attracts countless tourist every year. It’s right down on the harbor where fish packing houses once stood. Enjoy a leisurely walk through the boutiques and shops where you can purchase artwork, collectibles, resort fashions, and those special souvenirs for the folks back home.

When you’re hungry choose one of the sidewalk eateries, enjoy pasta and pizza, or slide into one of the fine establishments where you can enjoy a view of the harbor. In the day time the sight of blue water, hawks circling on high, and gulls that dip and cruise, will delight you. After dark watch the twinkling lights of tour boats and Charlotte Harbor.

Boating enthusiasts will be impressed with the variety of vessels docked at Fishermen’s Village from speedboats and cabin cruisers to luxury yachts.

There are trails to hike at the South Florida Birding Trail site, and tours to take at the Environmental Center’s Alligator Creek facility, just south of Punta Gorda on Burnt Store Road. You may even spot a pair of nesting bald eagles.

Baseball fans can look forward to 2009 and the opening of Charlotte County’s $46 million sports arena where the Tampa Bay Rays will conduct their spring training camp.

On August 13, 2004, Hurricane Charley, which was predicted to hit Tampa, made an unexpected right turn and slammed into Charlotte Harbor. It was the strongest storm to hit Florida since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. The town has recovered nicely from the destruction of torn roofs and destroyed buildings. Charley afforded Punta Gorda the chance to clean up some ramshackle areas of town, and make way for new business ventures to pop up.

A farmers market will soon be opening, and lots of bicycling paths are planned for the cycling enthusiast. A romantic two mile long promenade along the bay is also in the works.

Come to Punta Gorda now for the warm breezes and historical flavor. Bring your family and enjoy small town wholesome activities in a relaxed atmosphere. The beaches are beautiful, the boating and fishing is world class, and of course, the sense of history is everywhere.

Then, in a few years, come back and enjoy one of the healthiest spots in the country to retire. This is according to U.S. News, whose editors selected ten spots, with Punta Gorda being one. The opportunity to exercise, enjoy social interactions, and engage in a healthy lifestyle will keep you well ahead of the curve.

Getting More Than A Tan From Your Holiday Destination

Posted in Travel  by AnnaStenning on February 27th, 2009

If you are looking for something different from a summer holiday, fed up with overcrowded beaches, rowdy bars and several hundred tourists all fighting over one swimming pool, but still want to enjoy the sunshine, relax and unwind, then perhaps it’s time to leave beach holidays behind.

Many of us Brits remain very limited in our approach to summer holidays abroad, we tend to stick to what we know, however in our ignorance this leaves us missing many opportunities to enjoy a holiday which offers so much more, whilst still getting a tan.

Italy would generally be one of those places which seems to be missed off the map unless we are looking to visit a well known tourist location, and yet there are so many regions which offer holidays rich in history and culture, learning experiences whilst being just as relaxing, if not more so than a fortnight in Benidorm.

The Tuscany region would be one very such place, Tuscany is probably better known for its amazing wines, Chianti, Brunello di Montacino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano to name a few, yet dotted here and there amongst the vineyards and olive groves you will stumble across a traditional Tuscany hotel.

Tuscany or Toscana (the Italian) is mainly farming land (Agriturismo) and beautiful countryside, with rolling hills and mountains occasionally breaking the horizon, offering some of the most breath taking scenery.

A stay in a Tuscany hotel will allow you to experience the best of both worlds, leaving high rise apartment blocks and heaving tourist packed all inclusive hotels behind, whilst participating in a family holiday the kids will still love.

Tuscany hotels are usually quaint farmhouses or oil mills which have been delicately renovated to still compliment the canvas of the surrounding countryside, many will still be working farms with crops of olives, grapes or raising cattle. Many will use their own produce in the kitchens or wine lists of the hotel, in the form of extra virgin olive oil, fine wines and grappas (brandy distilled from the pomace of grapes used in wine making).

However some things will remain the same, there will still be facilities such as swimming pools and spa facilities, dining and entertainment, as well as offering the chance to participate in activities such as harvesting crops, wine making and tasting and perhaps even cookery courses using their own ingredients.

Tuscany holidays can be very family orientated, with plenty of activities open to children such as horse riding, depending on the location of your Tuscany hotel the major cities of art (the backbone of Italian tourism) will still be within easy reach, an hour or so drive (providing you have a hire car).

Visiting places such as Florence, Lucca, Siena, San Gimignano, Cortona, Pienza and Pisa, Pisa most famously known for the learning tower will undoubtedly highlight your holiday memories and provide an opportunity to relish some Italian history whilst being a great day out for the children too. But it is fair to say that the lesser known side of Italian history can be appreciated by discovering quaint historical towns and markets within the Tuscany region itself, this is a great way to learn about Italy without hitting the crowds.

Tuscany is a great location for weddings too, picture postcard scenery for your romantic setting, romantic country hotels which are more than capable and happy to cater for your needs, and also offer a superb location for a dreamy honeymoon.

So when looking to book your next holiday, and wanting to head off somewhere hot, take a minute to look further than the tourist beaches and English bars of the Costa Del Sol, and discover some of the hidden delights of the Italian Countryside.

Anna Stenning researches summer holiday locations which offer more culture and history than tourists and English bars, an Italian holiday to a Tuscany hotel provides a good example.
