Your Family Will Love Boca Grande In South West Florida

Posted in Destinations  by nickmesse on March 31st, 2009

If you are a regular visitor to Florida or exploring your options for a perfect Florida vacation for the first time, why not try something a little unusual.

Everyone tends to go to the big name places, such as Disney World, Daytona Beach, Busch Gardens and Kennedy Space Center. These are all fine attractions, but if you want to satisfy your more adventurous side, check out some of the islands of South West Florida.

Boca Grande on Gasparilla Island is an interesting place to visit. At the southern end are the deep waters of Boca Grande Pass which was where phosphate from the Bone Valley was loaded on huge cargo vessels in days gone by. Eventually the Port of Tampa was dredged out to accommodate the big ships, and this activity moved further north.

Today Boca Grande is a charming mixture of all things tropical with a charming helping of New England thrown in. It draws people from all walks of life including the very wealthy who enjoy spending their winters along the warm gulf coast.

With the busy concentration of folks, many locals use golf carts as their main method of transportation. With carts outnumbering conventional cars, one might think this would be a haven for kids roaring around. Thankfully, a driver must be fifteen years of age with a learners permit and have a licensed adult on board to enjoy this privilege.

Tarpon fishing is huge in Florida, and Boca Grande is one of the best spots to experience the thrill of this sport. Schools of tarpon make their way through the narrow pass each spring and summer. It’s then that anglers endeavor to hook one of these giants that can weigh as much as two hundred pounds. You won’t stand a chance unless you have a very fast boat because these big boys are jet propelled.

There’s a fine old inn on the edge of town that has welcomed many rich and famous guests. Both George Bush, and George W. Bush, along with their familes have enjoyed winters here. After all, what’s not to like. There are five beautiful beaches along the western side of the island where folks from anywhere can get sand between their toes.

Boca Grande’s many banjan trees suffered much damage when the infamous Hurricane Charley came roaring through on August 13, 2004. Although many buildings on the island were ripped apart, there were no lives lost.

Today the destruction has been repaired and visitors are continuing to enjoy the elegant but casual nature of Gasparilla Island. Along with shops, eateries, and water sports, there are miles of bicycle paths to explore.

If that weren’t enough, why not use this island as a base for exploring other nearby islands. There’s Cabbage Key which was made famous by a Jimmy Buffet song called Cheeseburger in Paradise, or for some superb shelling, shove off for Cayo Costa.Accessible only by boat, these islands will take your fun family vacation to a new level.

Euro Ski Holidays 2009 - Andorra

Posted in Travel  by tribune5 on March 31st, 2009

France’s Pyrenees are known for being a skier’s nirvana. Located on the borders of Spain and France, they offer skiers some of the best slopes in the world. Though many visitors choose to stay in either Spain or France, there is one more option. For the best in skiing, services and hospitality, the tiny country of Andorra should be your holiday destination. It’s got everything that you need at half the price.

Andorra is located in the Pyrenees surrounded by Spain and France. Once an isolated and unknown land, it is now a highly prosperous country because of its tourism industry. At an average of 83.5 years, the people of Andorra claim the highest life expectancy in the world. Because of its position within the mountains, the country doesn’t have much in common with the rest of Europe, except for Spain and France. It’s gone through many changes over the years, like being occupied by France and declaring war on imperial Germany during World War I.

Today, Andorra enjoys its status as the skiing tourist’s hotspot. Nine million visitors come to the country every year to enjoy its slopes and world class resorts. Its duty free status is another reason that it has so many visitors, as goods can be purchased much cheaper than in the rest of Europe.

Grandvalira, the largest ski resort in Andorra, is getting more visitors every year. The resort reports that despite the global downturn there could be as many visitors this year as last.

Thanks to an abundance of snowfall the resort opened earlier than usual. This fact combined with great conditions over Christmas and for the whole of January gave Grandvalira one of its most successful seasons in recent memory.

Skiers in the New Year enjoyed a metre of snowpack and powdered snow. With the snowfall the resort was able to maintain 100% percent ski lift use and 95 percent slope use, some of the highest numbers in the Pyrenees region. These conditions kept skiers coming from all around the globe, and as many as one and a half million skiers could have enjoyed the slopes over the course of the season.

Another reason that Grandvalira experienced such an increase in tourist traffic was the celebration of Pas de la Casa’s fiftieth anniversary. Pas de la Casa was the original name of the ski resort that was integrated into Grandvalira. To celebrate this, Grandvalira presented a full schedule of events for visitors. They included various sporting events, a skier’s statue inauguration, and a week dedicated to the history of the resort’s cuisine. Even Mickey Mouse got in on the action by making an appearance at the ski and snowboard school for photos.

In recent years, France and Spain have had their share of tourists, but Andorra has also been a very popular winter destination. From skiing the many miles of slopes to shopping for luxury items in duty free shops, the tiny country of Andorra has something for every winter holidaymaker. Its tiny size makes it ideal for focusing on skiing. Hopefully, next year’s season will be even better than the last, and the snow will keep coming down for the 2009-2010 season.

London Almost Paved With Gold But Not Quite

Posted in Destinations  by openroads on March 31st, 2009

Whilst the streets of London may not be paved with gold, as the famous phrase suggests, they are paved with almost everything else. One of the largest, multi-cultural cities in the World, London has something to offer for everyone, regardless of background, taste or needs.

Of the many multi-cultural factors of the City, the cuisines that are available are definitively the most prominent and renowned factor. It is almost impossible to find another town or city in the world with such a dense population of varied restaurants. Within a radius of only a few miles in London, one could enjoy, if they were so inclined, to have a French starter, a Moroccan main course and a mid-Caribbean desert, followed by a Turkish coffee to compliment the mixed range perfectly. In addition, a walk through China Town could follow the meal, before a late-evening nightcap in a Russian bar plays end to a wonderful evening.

Whilst fascinating to some, the varied amounts of culture in London can leave some people in awe and a simply wanting a piece of true, British London. If this is the case, choosing the appropriate hotel could be the way to fulfill this need. Although there are a range of hotels available, themed from all countries all over the world, there are masses of British hotels and a different British hotel to meet everyones individual needs. For example, an overnight stay for business purposes may require something central, with a gym, cafe and internet access within the hotel and the budget may allow for something of a notable high quality. This type of hotel would certainly not be a problem to find, nor would a hotel for an older couple, simply looking for a place to rest their head at night, with a clean and compact bathroom and located just out of the hustle and bustle of City life.

Often the most difficult parts of arranging a London break is not choosing where to stay or where to dine, but simply what to do. Somewhat obviously this isnt due to a lack of choice and is more down to the fact there is so much to see and do. Its difficult to complete many peoples To Do Lists in the amount of time they plan to spend in London, with those visiting for business purposes not having enough time due to work commitments and those on a four-day break simply realizing it is one day, week or month too short. However, although this may be a concern, there are several places of interest that are a must on any visitors itinerary. For example, the London Eye is many peoples first port of call when in London, followed by a tour around the Tower of London before heading towards Oxford Street for a bout of serious shopping. Starting the afternoon at Buckingham Palace, a walk up The Mall provides some wonderful photo opportunities that shouldnt be missed, before a cruise along the Thames finishes the day off flawlessly.

A fantastic City that is loved by many, London has a certain je ne sais quoi that it simply exudes, bringing visitor upon visitor to see the many wonderful sights and attractions that London has to offer.
