Recession Brings Cheap 2009 Holidays

Posted in Travel  by tribune5 on July 31st, 2009

The UK economy is not in good shape - not only is there the recession to consider but the country’s currency - sterling - has declined in value against the Euro, the currency used in the favourite holiday destinations such as Spain and the islands of Spain.

Unemployment in the UK is up and manufacturing is down. The current recession is due to the credit crunch, combined with the falling price of houses. Britain hasn’t experienced this kind of economic situation since the recession of 1991.

Despite trying times, many aren’t willing to give up their holidays to Spain and the Spanish islands like Majorca and Lanzarote, and British tourists are using the recession to get cheap deals on their 2009 holidays.

Cheap Holidays for British Tourists

Spending the holidays taking in the sand and sun of beaches on the Mediterranean or taking in the history of a distant country has become second nature to British holidaymakers. In the past, trips to Spain, Turkey, New York and Florida have been pricey. The Internet has helped holidaymakers create less expensive travel plans though. Holidays that used to break the bank are now becoming more affordable. Seventy-six percent of Brits who travelled overseas thought they got a great deal on their last holiday.

Here are a few ways to ensure a good deal on your next trip:

* Check out package deals and all inclusive holidays. Booking your flight, hotel and meals together can usually save tourists time and money.

* Check for cheaper flights at odd times. Catching the red eye isn’t part of an ideal holiday, but it is more affordable and allows holidaymakers to save money and still be able to travel.

* Compare currency from one country to another to see which destinations are most economical to visit.

* Travel during off-peak months. June and July are peak travel months. Plan a holiday in the off-peak times to get a better deal.

* Look for special offers. Many travel websites offer a deal of the day with cheap fares.

* Book last minute deals on flights and hotels. If airlines and resorts aren’t booked already, they offer better deals at the last minute to fill their empty spots.

* Locate discount tickets to area attractions before you go. Theme parks and other attractions frequently offer discount coupons and tickets online. A quick search for these can make an otherwise expensive family excursion more affordable.

Using the Internet to Find Cheaper Holidays

Things have changed in the travel industry since holidaymakers have access to the Internet. It relieves the need for a travel agent. You can save money by cutting out the middle man and searching for your own good deal. Now you can book holidays right from the comfort of your own home. You can compare prices of hotels, villas and flights from one site to another. Gaining access to pictures, reviews, prices, video, maps and more allows holidaymakers to make informed decisions about where to book their next holiday.

Now British holidaymakers can compare prices on various travel expenses, decide where their money is best spent and figure out ways to save money. A quick search on the Internet provides a list of travel options that fit in a tight budget. The economic downturn that Britain is experiencing isn’t expected to be long term. Next year is expected to be a year of recovery. Until then, Brits continue to find cheap deals for their holidays with the main tour operators offering some great deals.

Lanzarote is a popular holidays destination for UK tourists, and more information about the island’s accommodation with reviews of Lanzarote hotels are online at yourlanzarote.net

They have the latest news via their Lanzarote blog plus for new tourists a Lanzarote map

Posted in Travel  by rogerl on July 31st, 2009

Touring the magnificent Upper and Lower McKenzie River is one of the day trips that could be enjoyed from a centrally located RV park near Eugene. A 70 mile long trip invites you to drink in the clear, spirited waters of this mighty tributary of the Upper Willamette River. From viewing a myriad of wildlife to gazing at dynamic rock presentations, your senses will be elevated to a state of awe and wonder at this marvel.

Beginning at its source, high in the Cascades at Clear Lake, where unspoiled springs percolate up through purifying lava masses, the McKenzie twists through the Willamette National Forest. This tireless stream offers clear, pure water that has provided its watershed with some of the finest drinking water in the nation.

The filtering effect of the rich trees and vegetation and the purifying process from the lava beds give these waters superb quality. Near the city of Eugene, the mighty McKenzie joins its forces with the Willamette.

Two designated scenic drives lead to various activities ranging from fishing and rafting right on the river to soaking in nearby natural hot, mineral springs. The views of covered bridges and waterfalls are enhanced with light filtering down from the treetops in old growth forests. Horseback riding, hiking, and even fine golfing round out the options. All of this nestled in towering firs.

The McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway takes you on a 82 mile forested loop beside rugged lava fields and dazzling waterfalls. Proxy Falls cascades down 200 feet and the trails lead you so close that you can have the remarkable experience of actually touching the waterfall.

Nearby, Sahalie Falls splashes over a 100 foot high cliff. A 10 minute walk introduces you to Koosah Falls where the river tumbles 80 feet down. All are breathtaking and exhilarating. `

On this route you may also enjoy Belknap Springs which offers a cultivated hot mineral springs and generous walking paths through theme gardens. One of Lane County’s twenty covered bridges is nearby, in a spot where a bridges have been built, rebuilt, and restored since 1890. Truly a unique spot.

Wolf Rock is a 900 foot spectacle to behold near the town of McKenzie Bridge. Further on brings you to the Dee Wright Observatory, providing a viewing point of the Cascade Range. This stone monument is named after the 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps foreman who directed its formation.

A path will lead you 30 minutes through lava fields with interpretive information along the way. Viewing Mt. Washington, Mt. Jefferson, and the Three Sisters from the observatory gives a deeper appreciation for the grandeur of Oregon.

On the 145 mile Aufderheide Memorial Drive many scenic hiking trails are easily accessible. This drive, named after a Willamette National Forest Supervisor from the ’50s, connects to Westfir and there you can view the historic Westfir Covered Bridge. The Terwilliger Hot Springs, also on this drive, provide an aesthetic and therapeutic respite.

Closer to the City of Eugene, the quiet community of Leaburg invites you to its fish hatchery at Leaburg Dam where trout and salmon run the ladder. A quiet park provides restful picnicking. Nearby Goodpasture Bridge has earned the reputation of being the most photographed of its kind in Lane County.

On any of these drives you will most likely catch glimpses of deer, elk, beaver, and otter, as well as perhaps a bear or two. Hawks, osprey, peregrine falcons, and the stoic bald eagle are easily sited.
For the fisherman, in April through October the summer steelhead are abundant and in May through July you can easily spot the Spring Chinook.

Early Spring also lures the Flyfisherman. A specially crafted dory, The McKenzie Drift Boat, has become the signature boat. Twenty-five public boat launching sites provide easy access. There are plenty of outfitters and river guides available to satisfy your curiosity.

Wonders unfold with each season, from the brilliant Autumn hues to the sparkling snow white mountains of winter, to the greenery of spring, and then on to the clear skies of summer, touring the McKenzie is spectacular, even if you never leave your vehicle. Semana Santa in Seville an Unforgettable Experience

Posted in Destinations  by amayco on July 30th, 2009

Seville is a wonderful place to spend time throughout the year except perhaps during the intense heat of August. Its stunning, enormous cathedral, the historic Alcazar, its unbeatable flamenco, tapas and opera all of these aspects of this beautiful city are unsurpassable. But it is at Easter, or Semana Santa as it is known in Spain, that the population of Seville doubles in size as people from around the world come to witness, and experience, the profoundly moving celebrations here.

The Semana Santa celebrations consist of no fewer than 60 religious processions through the narrow atmospheric streets of Seviile beginning on Palm Sunday and continuing until the morning of Easter Sunday itself. The origins of the observances can be found back in the Middle Ages the oldest of the Seville brotherhoods, El Silencio, for example, was created in 1340 and many of the amazing and ornate pasos, or floats, that you see carried through the streets can date back to the 1600s.

Each procession will go from the church in which the religious icons to be carried are kept throughout the year. Usually, there will be a representation of Christ and another of the Virgin, showing a releavant part of the Easter story. Some of them have an incredible monetary value. Most will feature spectacular floral displays around the icon itself. The floats are carried by costaleros along a traditional route to the cathedral and then back. This can take between eight and fourteen hours to complete. When you consider that some of these floats can weigh well in excess of 2000kg, you ll begin to understand the effort the approximately forty or so costaleros has to put in.

Behind the floats will be the hooded and cloaked penitents known as nazarenos, marching usually in pairs and carrying long, wax candles. Often the procession is accompanied by choirs, wind quartets or, more usually a trumpet and drum band. If you’re very lucky, you may be nearby when some-one in the crowd or on an overhanging balcony offers up a heartrending flamenco ballad known as a saeta.

The moods of the processions change during the week becoming more sombre until the climax of the week the night of Holy Thursday when the crucified Christ is slowly carried around the streets. This is the night when the El Silencio Brotherood and the other well-known groups such as La Macarena and Los Gitanos parade reverentially through the city.

The Easter Sunday procession, by contrast, is a far more joyous occasion, celebrating the resurrection of the son of God.

A sense of pageantry, tradition and religious devotion permeates through Seville during Semana Santa and has an impact on everyone in the city whether they themselves are religious or not. It leaves a lasting impression on everyone who ever attends.

Naturally, because of the thousands of people flocking to Seville during Holy Week, accommodation can be very difficult to find and hotel rates can significantly increase. Many people prefer to find apartment accommodation, which not only gives them much more freedom and independence but can also, especially at Semana Santa, prove to be excellent value for money.

Semana Santa in Seville is one of the most important events of the city, hundreds of people comming to the city to be part of the processions. Be sure to book you Accommodation Sevilleas soon as you can. Sevilla Hotel, Seville Apartments
