Moving To Canada? It’s Time To Have A Look At Their Sports

Posted in Destinations  by scottking on May 31st, 2010

With the 2010 World Cup only weeks away and the whole of England preparing themselves for what they’re hoping will be a replica of the 1966 tournament, so if you’ve had a visa for Canada granted and are planning a move soon, then it’s probably worth your while to take a look at what sports are popular within Canada - the country doesn’t have a fantastic national team and football, or soccer, isn’t a particularly popular sport.

Fortunately, there are plenty of other sports to get your teeth into if you’re a sports fan, with the following 3 being prime examples of massively popular sports in Canada.

1. Ice Hockey - arguably the sport that Canada is most well known for and what the country enjoys most, ice hockey is actually the official national winter sport of Canada and the very first ice hockey game played indoors was on the 3rd March 1875 at the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal.

The National Hockey League (NHL) is the highest hockey league that teams can compete in and is made up of 24 American teams and 6 Canadian teams.

In addition, although an American team - the Pittsburgh Penguins - won the latest NHL title, it is two Canadian teams, the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs that dominate the overall leader board, with 24 and 13 victories respectively.

2. Basketball - officially starting in Springfield, Massachusetts, America In 1891, by 1985 basketball was a game that was sweeping across both America and Canada and has remained a popular sport ever since.

Like ice hockey, the National Basketball Association (NBA) covers both America and Canada, although only one Canadian team still plays in the NBA, known as the Toronto Raptors.

3. Professional Wrestling - talk about Canada to any professional wrestling fan and you’ll be immediately greeted with a huge smile. Whilst most people would associate professional wrestling, such as World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), with America, a substantial amount of the highest level professional wrestlers have been trained in Canada.

The majority of training took place in a basement gym that is traditionally known as the Dungeon and by the legendary Stu Hart, the father of the Hart family, whose sons and daughters have all been heavily involved in the professional wrestling industry

With Bret Hart arguably being the most popular professional wrestler of all time (alongside the likes of Hulk Hogan). Bret toured the world after learning the sport from his father and after leaving WWE in the late 1990s, has returned in recent months to a tremendous reception.

Whilst these 3 sports may be regarded as the most popular in the country on a national level, there are many other sports that are just as big - if not bigger - on a more local level. Just like Sunday League football in the UK, Canadian Football and the many baseball teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays who play Major League Baseball (MLB), all have a massive following and it is simply a matter of finding the sport that you like best after you move to the country.

5 Places To Go The Next Time You Visit New Zealand

Posted in Destinations  by callstar on May 31st, 2010

I hope you enjoy this article and I also hope you take the time to visit these wonderful towns the next time you are in the North Island of New Zealand.

Rotorua

Rotorua is the number one tourist destination in New Zealand, although the folk down south like to think that Queenstown is better, I am telling you right now ….they are wrong. Rotorua has a phenomenal amount of things one can do over the period of a week. The natural, thermal hot pools and spas in Rotorua are second to none. I have been to Rotorua dozens of times and always come back feeling completely relaxed and ready to get back into life. It’s not just hot relaxing spas that Rotorua has to offer, they also have hot mud pools and a variety of fun activities. Some of these include; Luging, biking, hiking, sightseeing, Zorb, go-karts, 10 pin bowling, horse trekking, bungeejumping, helicopter rides, four-wheel-drive rides, native Maori performances & food, and so much more.

Karapiro

Karapiro is a wonderful place to go, situated about 6 km from Cambridge, it’s the perfect place for a romantic getaway. If you plan on taking the family there’s also tons to do. Karapiro accommodation is very affordable and of a very high quality. There are many things to do at Lake Karapiro such as; wake boarding, jet skiing, waterskiing, rowing, swimming, and pretty much any other watersport you can think of. The 2010 World Rowing Championships are being held in Karapiro this October. You would be stupid not to visit this great little place.

Waitomo

2 years ago, a friend and I went to Waitomo. I didn’t get to see the glow worm caves but now I wish I had. We camped not far from where the glowworm caves are. The campsite was a little over two hours from where we parked the car. In the time we stayed there we didn’t come across any other people. At night we went down to the river and there we saw the biggest eels I had ever seen. They were everywhere! My friend was even able to kick one up onto the bank. About 5 m from our tent there were black berry fields forever; it’s a real shame that I don’t eat fruit. I highly recommend anyone wanting something a little bit different, to check out Waitomo and the surrounding area.

Te Aroha

I was fortunate enough to live in this small town for over six years. A lot of the kids complained because they had nothing to do in the town. But my friends and I were different; we loved the Bush and the mountain. We would go up there almost every single day. I also worked up the mountain, one of the best jobs I ever had. If you really love tramping/trekking/bushwalking then Te Aroha is a great place to go. Te Aroha has the only natural hot water geyser in the world, it goes off approximately every 45 minutes … it’s a real site to see.

Hamilton

Hamilton is one of the fastest growing towns in New Zealand at the moment. The town’s slogan is “Hamilton, where it’s happening”. If you like restaurants, cafes, and fancy a boat ride down the mighty Waikato River then Hamilton is a great place to go. It’s not a place that most people would consider tourist worthy, but hey … I live here, and I’m biased.

New Zealand is the place to be!
