Visit Salt Lake City in the Fall

Posted in Destinations  by terrydaniels09 on June 30th, 2010

Most people think of taking a vacation in the summer. It is a good time because the kids are out of school.

However, it can get expensive to travel during the summer. Plus most places are hot and crowded.

Have you ever considered traveling in the fall? The weather is cooler and flights are usually more affordable.

You may have to take the kids out of school, but maybe it’s worth it. If you do decide to travel in the fall, a great place to visit is Salt Lake City.

This city has a lot of great attractions and events during the fall season and would be a great spot for your family to visit. One major plus about coming to Salt Lake City during the fall is it’s a very beautiful time of year there.

The trees start to change colors and the weather cools down a lot. You may even want to take a hike or go on a drive in one of the many canyons in Salt Lake to see the beautiful leaves.

During the month of September visitors can also go to the Utah State Fair. This huge fair lasts just over a week and has so much going on.

Guests will enjoy concerts, live entertainment, a rodeo, many exhibits, animals, food booths, rides and more. It’s an event you will not want to miss.

Fall is also a time for Halloween. This popular holiday is celebrated in many ways all over the Salt Lake Valley.

One attraction people love to visit during the fall is corn mazes. Huge fields of corn are turned into large mazes for visitors to find their way through.

For those looking for a scare, you can also visit a haunted corn maze. A few corn mazes in the area are the Crazy Corn Maze and Cornbelly’s Corn Maze & Pumpkin Fest.

If you love theme parks, then you will want to visit Lagoon, which is just 15 minutes north of Salt Lake City. During the month of October Lagoon has an event called Frightmares.

The whole park gets dressed up for Halloween and provides fun for all ages. Visitors can ride the roller coasters or check out one of the haunted attractions.

They even have some Halloween attractions for younger visitors that are not quite as scary. For those who do love to be scared, Utah also has its share of haunted houses.

A few popular haunted attractions in the area are Castle of Chaos, Nightmare Mansion, and Nightmare on 13th. There is also a haunted forest about 30 minutes south of Salt Lake for visitors who would prefer to be scared in an outdoor setting.

Another outdoor haunted attraction is the Haunted Village located at This is the Place Heritage Park. Guests will walk through the old pioneer village and may even see some interesting things lurking around.

This attraction is not recommended for children under the age of 10. However, across the street from the Haunted Village is Hogle Zoo.

During October they always put on a few events to celebrate the season, which may be much more appealing to the younger crowd. One of these events is “Boo at the Zoo” where kids can come dressed up and trick or treat on the zoo grounds.

Another great attraction for kids is Wheeler Farm. All throughout October this farm offers wagon rides and a pumpkin patch where kids can pick a pumpkin and decorate it.

Each weekend Ghost Tours in Salt Lake City are given. Travel by bus through the city as you are told of stories about the different ghosts who haunt the historic buildings and cemeteries in the city.

If you love going to shows, then check out Thriller put on by Odyssey Dance Theatre at Kingsbury Hall. This show features many favorite Halloween characters and is a thrill for all ages.

One more Halloween attraction to visit in Salt Lake City is Gardner Village. This village is full of shops and boutiques; however, during October the village is dressed up for the season.

Witches roam the grounds and fun activities happen each weekend. Lastly, if you happen to be in Salt Lake during the month of November, the day after Thanksgiving is always when the beautiful Christmas lights at Temple Square are turned on.

It is a great way for you to leave fall behind and look forward to the Christmas Season. Have an enjoyable trip to Salt Lake in the fall!

Working Holiday in Japan - Questions to Ask

Posted in Destinations  by jimmycox on June 30th, 2010

You may have heard of people going on a working holiday in Japan. By all appearances, such an experience promises a lot of fun and excitement. Before you consider jumping on the opportunity though, there are a couple of things you need to know.

What is this program?

There are many countries that allow visitors to both work and enjoy holidays. This specific program offered by the Japanese government however is the result of a mutual agreement between Japan and other countries. Australia was the very first country to enjoy this benefit but is now joined by New Zealand, Canada, South Korea, France, Germany and the UK. The newest countries to sign the agreement are Ireland and Denmark. If you are a resident of these countries, you will have passed the first criterion to apply for special working holiday visas.

As the term implies, the program is primarily for people who wish to enjoy a vacation. This means that a traveler’s intention must primarily be to enjoy the sights and sounds of the country. Finding a job is only a secondary focus. Once a visitor has found a job, he is allowed to keep it only for the duration of his visa’s validity. This is usually six months with a possible extension of another six months. Only Australians can apply for extensions that will allow them to stay up to eighteen months.

Who is qualified to apply?

Aside from residency requirements, there are other qualifications that applicants for Japan working holiday visas must meet. They must be eighteen to thirty years old and must have never been to the country on a previous occasion. Also, they must already have their own passports and be in excellent health.

One other important requirement is related to personal finances. An applicant should be able to show that he is able to support himself during his entire vacation stay. At a minimum, an applicant should show that he at least has $2,000 for his stay. With the proof of funds, applicants should also present specific vacation plans and a booked return ticket home.

What are the expenses involved?

If you live in the UK, you would have to pay six pounds for your special visa. The application is free in other countries. The first real expense would therefore be the airfare. That would cost around $2,700 to $3,000 although you may be able to get a cheap deal of a little over $1,000 for a plane ticket.

The living expenses give a little more cause for worry. You can expect to spend a little over 100,000 yen every month for food, transportation and accommodation. If, however, you plan to travel from December to April, you may be able to bag a resort position in a tourist hotspot like Nagano. In winter resorts, food and accommodations are free so you can expect to save a lot of cash in these places.

A working holiday in Japan is truly an experience to remember because it allows you to enjoy the many attractions of the country while maintaining a job. If you qualify as an applicant, you should take the first chance you’ve got to apply for the program.

Discovering the History of Alcatraz

Posted in Destinations  by terrydaniels09 on June 30th, 2010

There are so many things to do in the San Francisco Bay area. A popular choice is to visit Alcatraz Island which is full of history and venture.

It is an island located in the San Francisco Bay, 1.5 miles off the shore from California. It is also sometimes referred to as The Rock.

It was originally a small island which served as a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison and a Federal Bureau of Prisons federal prison until 1963. However, later in 1972, it became a national recreation area and received land marking designations in 1976 and again in 1986.

Currently, it is a historic site that is operated by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and it is open for tours daily. The island has ferry rides from Pier 33 that can reach the island near Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco.

In 2008, the nation’s first hybrid propulsion ferry started serving the island. Alcatraz has been featured in many movies, TV shows, cartoons, books, comics and games, bringing it into popular culture.

The first documentation of the island was made by a Spaniard named Juan Manuel de Ayala in the year 1775. He charted the Bay and named the island “La Isla de los Alcatraces” which means “The Island of the Pelicans.”

It is home to the no longer operational prison, the site of the oldest operating lighthouse on the west coast, early military fortifications and natural features such as rock pools, a seabird colony and unique views of the coastline.

The earliest known owner of the island of Alcatraz is Julian Workman, to whom it was given by Mexican governor Pio Pico in 1846. It was given for Workman to build a lighthouse on it.

Later, the Military Governor of California, John C. Fremont, champion of Manifest Destiny and leader of the Bear Flag Republic bought the island for $5000 in the name of the United States government. Later, in 1850, President Millard Fillmore ordered that it be set apart for military purposes only based upon the U.S. after the United States acquired California from Mexico as a result of the Mexican-American War.

Following the acquisition of California, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican American War. Next, the California Gold Rush began the following year and the U.S. Army began studying the suitability of Alcatraz Island for the positioning of coastal protection against those approaching the San Francisco Bay.

Government officials began fortifying the island in 1853 under the direction of Zealous B. Tower and the Corps of Engineers. The island’s first barracks at Camp Alcatraz brought in about 200 soldiers and eleven cannons that arrived at the end of that same year.

Then, when the American Civil War broke out in 1861, the island mounted 85 cannons in case people came around its perimeter despite its small size.

It also served as the San Francisco Arsenal for storage of firearms to prevent them falling into the hands of Southern sympathizers. Alcatraz never fired its guns offensively, but it was used to imprison Confederate sympathizers and privateers from the west coast of the United States.

Because of its isolation from the outside world, it was used to house Civil War prisoners since 1861. After the war in about 1866, the army made modernization efforts like an ambitious plan to level off the entire island and construct a shell-proof underground tunnel system.

That plan was started but never completed as the army switched its focus from coastal defense to detention. This seemed like the perfect assignment given its isolated state.

Then, in 1867, a brick jailhouse was built which previously held inmates in the basement of the guardhouse. The next year, it was officially designated as a long term detention facility for military prisoners.

Today, it is just a place for tours to visit the history and interesting past of the island. It is a fascinating tour for people of all ages and interest levels.

You can go and see the magnificent views as well as hear entertaining stories of people who tried to escape the island. There are so many great tales and interesting sights to see, you will be left with a unique experience full of memories.

Growing Salt Lake City

Posted in Destinations  by terrydaniels09 on June 30th, 2010

Salt Lake City is the largest and most populous area in the state of Utah. There are lots of things to do in its beautiful, diverse land.

The name of the place is frequently shortened to Salt Lake or to its initials SLC. With an estimated population of 183,171, the area lies in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, which has a total estimated population of 1,130,293.

It is situated in a larger urban area known as the Wasatch Front which has an estimated population of 2,298,915. It was founded in 1847 as Great Salt Lake City by a group of Mormon pioneers led by their prophet, Brigham Young.

They extensively irrigated and cultivated the arid valley while they continued building the area in its early days. The economy took off with several mining booms and the construction of the first transcontinental railroad.

This place was then nicknamed the Crossroads of the West. Salt Lake City has since developed a strong outdoor recreation tourist industry based primarily on skiing.

It was the host of the 2002 Winter Olympics and is the industrial banking center of the United States. The Winter Games brought in many improvements to the area that have continued to draw many to the area.

The famous ski resorts are still home to some big competitions for skiing and snowboarding. There are 11 world class resorts within a one hour radius of the International Airport.

When you embark on your next ski vacation, make sure you spend your time on the slopes and not on the road. They are all very accessible from the Salt Lake Area; in fact, seven of the eleven resorts are only within a 30 to 45 minute drive from the airport.

In some states you have to drive about three hours to get to some fair slopes, but not in Utah. The airport is served by 13 major airlines and 726 daily flights making it a convenient place to spend your time in the winter.

The ski resorts have something for everyone. You can attend competitions and watch how high the athletes rise above ground level.

There are always impressive and entertaining displays put on by professionals in the winter extreme sports industry. Perhaps, staying on the side lines is not for you.

You can hit the slopes on your very own set of skis or rented ones of course. Whether you prefer skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling or making snow angels, there is something to do for everyone in Salt Lake City.

The powdery snow is unlike any other in the country as the dry climate allows it to be the perfect texture that those from the East coast envy. The conditions allow for perfect carving and mountainside exploration of any kind.

If you like to push yourself down the black diamonds or just enjoy a stroll down the greens, you are guaranteed a great ride down the beautifully groomed runs of Utah’s world class ski resorts. If you are an expert or have never been in the snow before, there are also professional instructors that can help you improve your skills and have a great time on the slopes.

There are so many things to do in Salt Lake City, the only question that will remain is where to start first. From the minute you step off the plane, there are so many things to captivate your attention.

Also in Salt Lake are some great shopping locations like the Gateway outdoor shopping mall. Located in the heart of downtown, there are endless stores for you to fall in love with your newest possessions.

From clothes to watches, from toys to technology, there is something waiting for you. During the summer time, you can also play in the fountains that shoot from the ground to cool you off in the middle of your shopping extravaganzas.

There are also so many delicious restaurants in the area for you to fill up when the tank runs dry. The many options will leave your whole party satisfied.

Salt Lake City is certainly a metropolis with plenty of things to do for the whole family. The adventurous and playful options are endless in this beautiful area where the snow falls perfectly and the mountains set a gorgeous scene every day of the year.
